I think you guys are focussing on the drive way too much and not enough on the part where it took me 5 strokes to get into the cup from 20 yards off the green.

I feel your pain. This has happened to me so many times and is so frustrating. I remember after one such hole looking at my friend and making the comment, "2 shots to get 470 yards and 4 shots for the last 30 feet. Ridiculous."

Well, that is because I do this all the time now. I don't hit the ball any worse than when I was scratch, maybe I hit it better. Unfortunately, I shoot around 80-85 on a bad day, which means a shitload of shots on and around the greens. Once in awhile I can get hot with my putter, but I can't chip if I don't practice.

This thread has got me thinking about getting some new clubs finally, especially after just how crappy my irons felt yesterday. I'll just have to put "new clubs" on the items-to-purchase list, which no thanks to the denizens of StyleForum, is already overbrimming with the finest and most expensive versions of everything. Why, just in the past two days I've learned I need a Stowa Marine Original and a bird's beak paring knife.

Early in the season it's less about scoring and more about bragging rights. At least, that's how it was for me.

And, if it took you 5 shots to get down from 20 yards out, you might just look at a new PW instead of a whole new set of irons. That is, if you absolutely MUST buy something.

Hey, not only did I just buy a complete set of semi-decent clubs, for a sport I can't really play yet, I also just had them re-gripped. How am I doing?

If the only "wedge" you have in your bag is a PW .. I envy you. I have 4 wedges. PW, and a 50, 54, 58. I can hit my PW 150ish, and like the 3 other wedges to fill out the space between 50 to 150 yards. Don't use the 58 much though, mainly because my home course is pretty easy with little requirment to play flop or bunker shots.

In reality .. I'd like more. I could easily swap out my 3/4 and 6 iron's for a 52 and 56 wedge. From 150-225 yards I have 8 clubs (3-PW). From 50-150 .. I'm supposed to have 1 or 2? Seems unrealistic when 80% of my iron shots come from inside 150 years.

If you are shooting in the 90s, and you hit your PW 150, can we assume that you just skull it every time?

The average golfer cannot hit the ball 280yds under any circumstances, though many think they can. Half the time they look at the length of the hole on the scorecard, and don't account for the fact that they teed off 40yds closer to the hole than that.

My instructor was telling us about the time he played a round as John Daly's partner (this was some time ago). Our pro said Daly used a PW for a 160 yard shot and he thought Daly was "from another universe."

Does your PW belong to a set where they maker de-lofts everything to make the golfer feel manly? I had cobra's early in high school and I think the PW was 45* or so, vs 48* or so with my titleists.

I've never had any probs w/ just the PW and SW. Learn to choke up/punch when needed... If I had more wedges I think I would have much less feel with each.
