I think what we have here has been theorized by others on various fan forums. I think we have an "Endgame/Ground Hog Day" mash of a Series. There will be one scenario (Dr. Strange/Bran) has foreseen, that can defeat the NK/Thanos death power. Other scenarios have been played before as Bran alludes to but they have us on a treadmill of thought. However, on this Ground Hog day, Bran/Strange thinks they got it right! There will be a "darkest before the dawn" moment, but it must happen to bring about the change. This GOT Series is using a battle to prove a point. People say "you are born to die," this story is telling you that "there is no life without death, only death can produce life." Personification of Philosophy at its best!! BTW Jesus said it also. Not using that to be religious, just stating a fact.
Uh...sure. Whatever you say

It seems like the whole theory is based on the NK having particular knowledge of what was going on south of the wall (dragons exist, Jon was planning a raid to capture a wight). How would he know all that? It also assumes he wants to be a King in the traditional political sense.

he has no desire to be a king in the traditional sense and that is not an assumption of the theory. He isn't going to KL to sit the iron throne or to rule, rather to bring the endless night to KL.

There are several possible theories for how he could have the requisite knowledge. He may or may not have acquired all or some part of Bran's powers by touch and also recall that in both the books and the show he was once a man and could also retain his knowledge Westeros' geography.

Bran is pretty specific that the NK just wants to kill him so he can create a world of darkness. I'm not sure how sitting on the Iron Throne would help him with that.

he would go to KL to attack where his enemy is weak and unprepared and create wights in the south rather than to site the throne

Dany showing up with her dragons was simply a happy coincidence for the NK and he took advantage of it.

He had a lance and heavy chain . . . . the operative assumption is that he had that heavy chain on site for that specific purpose. This implies foreknowledge

Edit to add: someone else was discussing the NK being the cause of winter. I always assumed it was the other way around: the NK could only travel south when winter arrived. If that is the case, wouldn't he have to wait for winter to reach KL before he could hang out there?

the others/white walkers bring the cold, the show has shown them doing it both at the entrance to the cave and at Hardhome

This was at the end of the article you linked to:

"The last shot of Episode 3 would then be the Night King reaching King’s Landing with his ice dragon, where he kills a million people and claims the Iron Throne for himself."

I assumed that sentence was part of the overall theory, rather than the just article author riffing on the theme. After a re-read, I stand corrected; the actual quoted theory (on its own) makes sense.

There are several possible theories for how he could have the requisite knowledge. He may or may not have acquired all or some part of Bran's powers by touch and also recall that in both the books and the show he was once a man and could also retain his knowledge Westeros' geography.

That's a big part of my question. General geography is one thing. But the NK was created thousands of years before the current events in the show. Did KL even exist when the NK was created? I also asked in my other post about his connection with Bran and if anything beyond the brand being a magical GPS had been established. If not, then we're again asking how the NK knew the dragons were back, Jon would come north of the wall AND that Dany would come and save them. And how he knows where KL is and why it's important.

If the show even bothers to try and explain it, I expect it will tie into his connection to Bran.

Those damn chains pissed off a lot of fans. But which is more likely: the NK had his army drag tons of chains hundreds of miles to that exact spot at that exact time because he knew he would have a chance to take down a dragon with his special "dragon killing" spear and would need something to drag its corpse out of a frozen lake? Or the NK killed a dragon with a cool looking weapon and it was dragged out with chains because it looked cool on tv and screw logic?

Yes, I know they bring cold and can freeze things/people. I'm asking if they are directly responsible for the winter. Again, just an assumption, but I always thought they got their power from the cold and so were restricted by the seasons. There's definitely been winters in Westeros since the Wall was built to keep the WWs out.

Another thing turk ignored is that the white walkers were created for the sole purpose of wiping out men. Once the children of the forest realized they make Dr. Frankenstein's mistake, they teamed up with men to stop the complete destruction of the world. So the mindless monsters are doing exactly what they were created to do, wipe men from the face of the planet.

Do you think this will be canon in the books though, or was it retconned for the show?

IIRC the lands of the far east like Asshai had their own version of "The Long Night" legends, as do the Dothraki. Makes me wonder if it isn't some sort of cyclical magical doomsday that the NK draws power from or if in book-canon the others will predate men landing on Westeros.

The whole Long Night story element reminds me of Dark Souls. If you have a game console and haven't played that yet, you don't know what you're missing.

We will probably never know because those books will never be finished.

In the book it was was noted by a pyromancer that their spells had become more powerful and he idly inquired if dragons had come back to the world.

Totally unrealistic. No way some random chick takes out the NK. It's about ethics in GOT.
