Or are the making some sort of ground up dragonglass and iron hybrid (like adding carbon for steel)?

That was my handwavy assumption when I saw them smithing it.

How much dragonglass (or Valerian steel) you actually need anyways? Would an inlay that touched flesh be enough or does it actually have to do the cutting?

In the inside the episode, the producer said Dany killed Sam's older brother.

Also, if the wall was magic, why could Jon and team bring the wight beyond the wall?

In the books, iron killed the wights and White Walkers, so maybe Gendry's just making black iron weapons, rather than steel.

Iron didn't kill them, it just didn't shatter like ordinary steel

I dunno about that--Robert is referred to as the usurper. That word implies illegality or illegitimacy. If you believe in bloodlines/birthright, then that trumps anything else. We are also given to believe that many in westeros agree with this--they wanted to go about their lives so they accepted Robert's rule, but they would support a true targ monarch.

The targs united the 7 kingdoms, so if you are going to go with bloodline stuff, I suppose you can make an argument that 300 years doesn't matter as they essentially created a new throne. There was no one else before them.

Robert failed to end the bloodline, so the claim must still exist (that's why he was so dedicated to making sure they were all gone even if they were just babies).

Exactly right that among Targ loyalists John has the superior claim over Dany but of course that doesn't always carry the day because the decision involves political and military calculations as well as claims of bloodline. Stannis clearly had the superior claim to succession over Renly in the war of the five kings and the lords loyal to Storm's end/house baratheon all picked Renly anyway.

Among targ loyalists who want to recover the positions they lost in robert's rebellion Dany would be the natural choice because she has the army and dragons and can win.

If you want to have an ending to satisfy book nerds Dany needs to stab John through the heart with long claw (or vice versa) to forge light bringer and fulfill the Nissa Nissa prophesy

that happened on camera in Season 7. She had her dragon roast the father and brother (Dickon) after raiding the wagon train that looted the gold from highgarden

Jon claim to the throne is not that strong anyway it bases on an obscure journal and visions of mad tree kid. He definitely needs someone like Howland Reed to confirm this and even then it's still tenuous at best.

dickon is the younger brother

oh good catch
