So, my order of events went as such:
1. Watch season 1, and love it.
2. Get super antsy, unwilling to wait until season 2 to find out what happens.
3. Buy all 5 books, and read them over winter break...naturally assuming they would, to some extent, align with the show.

Same. I bought the whole set when book 5 came out and GRRM promised there would never be a gap that long (7 years) again.
