Ugh. The only thing that was interesting about the character in the book was that she was insecure and inexperienced. In the show she's brutally murdering some guy, twisting a sword in his stomach and all that. Totally out of character.

And the warrior woman is the most cliched character in film today. I mean, how many of them are in this show anyway? There's Theon's sister, Arya, Bri, the bear lady, the redheaded girl with the bow, am I forgetting anyone? Probably.

And you'll wish she was dead by the time they get through the most recent novel. All she does is wander around for hundreds of pages.

Who's they? It seems only Brienne felt that way, but all she had to work with was hearsay and what she saw when they actually fought.

GRRM has said that Arthur Dayne with the sword Dawn was the greatest swordsmen in recent Westrosi history. He said, without Dawn, Barristan Selmy would have been his equal and may have even surpassed him at their peaks, but that Dawn was enough advantage to make Dayne better. Dawn is a sword made of a fallen star, not Valaryan steel.

The Mountain is not a swordsman. He's a brute. He swings a two-handed greatsword one handed. And, can be bested by a more complete fighter.

As a swordsman Loras is second to his non-crippled brother. Can't think of his name offhand.

    Absolutely.

    Willas, IIRC.

The Mountain is definitely not a swordsman. The reason he has to be included is his sheer size and strength--which allow him to 1) wield huge weapons and have great reach, and 2) wear much thicker armor than most. This makes him incredibly formidable, even if his abilities are significantly less than Barristan Selmy or Arthur Dayne. Even if you can score hits on him, his thick armor is going to deflect it, and then you just stepped into his range.

Obviously he's able to be defeated by tons of skill, a lot of luck, and the right tactics. But he'd be a rough fight even for Barristan or Jaime.

I do think Barristan is one of the three possibles. There are a couple of answers you guys are missing.

Don't click this unless you want a book spoiler.
The Red Viper. He beat The Mountain one on one. He's had other major kills from a very young age. This guy is dangerous.

The Knight of Flowers is a possible.

Now, these guys only think in terms of men of their station. I would have put my money on Syrio Forel. Maybe even Bronn.

Not mentioned much, but he was one of the coolest characters of the series.

Metal from the heart of a falling star, so it's made from meteorite metal.

Book spoilers and wild conjecture below:

Some people are guessing that Arthur Dayne killed himself, to protect the child of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, who would be the new legitimate king. IE Jon Snow.

The mountain also fights in a rather ridiculous amount of armor, more than any other knight in the kingdom could actually wear. I would say based on the book's description of his superhuman size and strength, he's a good bet against pretty much anybody. In the show, however, they just found the biggest dude they could, and there are probably not 3 people on the earth who even match the dimensions set out in the book (IIRC around 8 feet tall and 400 lbs of pure muscle) so he doesn't really seem quite as impressive.

Those chapters do really suck but they way they end is actually pretty amazing.

But I do agree that they aren't really selling Brienne's naivete. She's supposed to be this huge, physically strong woman but she's also young and starry eyed. All of the wandering in AFFC seems like it's supposed to be her coming of age. AFFC is a sort of anti-war book, and Brienne's story is really central to that. But it's a huge comedown from all the action in Storm of Swords. The Jaime and Cersei chapters get pretty repetitive too. The only storyline in that one that I really get into is Arya's.

Jaime doesn't know who Bronn or Syrio are.

His world is limited to Knights and men-at-arms from the Seven Kingdoms who likely fight in tourneys on a regular basis.

Of the living at the time of the statement those who could qualify are:
    Oberyn Martell
    Barristan Selmy
    Garlan Tyrell
    Gregor Clegane
    Sandor Clegane
Randyll Tarly could qualify. He's older, but has a Valyrian Steel sword and is one of the best soldiers/generals in Westeros
    Lyn Corbray
    Balon Swann?

R+L=J. It makes sense on so, so many fronts. Also explains why Ned wouldn't talk about who his mother was--given Robert's known hatred of, and proclivity for killing, Targaryens.
