Certainly some issues, but nothing to get so bent out of shape over.
I don't fully understand some of the changes (why they had Cat release Jaime before hearing about the girls, why they had Robb find out about it before breaking his wedding vow, where they're going with Jon's arc) but I think everyone who knows the books releases that the story told in the books would be literally impossible to tell in a TV series even with infinite episodes and money. That's not really a bad thing either, I'm going back through the books again and some of the plotlines are not exactly optimized. Arya and Danaerys's stories in particular could get trimmed massively without losing much of anything, and those are where we're seeing a lot of the changes.
Its a shame though...arya's chapters were always some of my favorites but I can understand how you could take out a lot of that without breaking the core storyline (although it would really diminish her character).
I understand changes need to be made. ASOIAF is long and convoluted, and making smart editing decisions will help the story, but thats not what these asshats are doing. Here's a rundown of changes off the top of my head that make no sense and dont help streamline the plot.
1.Killing a bloodrider
2.Stealing the dragons WTF
3.Nixing the Hands chain storyline WTF
4.Making Bronn head of the citywatch
5.Possibly replacing Jeyne Westerling with this Volantis broad WTF
6. The release of Jaime
7. Cutting Meera and Jojen WTF
8. Having Jon see an other WTF
9. The meeting of Jon and Ygritte
10. Cutting Jon's realization of his warg ability WTF
11. Changing the people Arya has killed
12. Nixing the Weasel soup
13. Having Littlefinger go to Harrenhal
These are all mostly important story altering changes. The shits annoying and unnecessary. What is the battle of the blackwater going to look like now? Readers know what I'm talking about. I've been looking forward to that battle since season one. When are we going to see Edmure and riverrun? Like I said, fuck this show.
Using the Weasel soup as an example. Think of how much more screen time it would have taken to do that properly. Some of the changes you've listed I'm certainly upset about (mostly the Reeds), but the fact is a lot of it was necessary. Also, we don't know exactly the purpose/eventual outcome of all of these changes.
how has blackwtaer changed?
They cut out Tyrions chain of hands.
How are these changes necessary? I'll let the weasel soup and the changing of Jon and Ygritte slide, but the rest of them are asinine at best and flat out retarded at worst.
Can't say that with any certainty yet because the season/show isn't over. Also, stuff like Jon seeing an Other or Dany's dragons getting stolen are to increase the drama. Slowly building suspense works a lot better in a massive novel than it does in a TV show.
A lot of these changes are to cut down on the number of characters (cutting Meera and Jojen), save money on special effects (the Chain), or to give screen time to characters that in the books are otherwise doing nothing of interest in most of book 2 or would otherwise be underused for the TV show (the stealing the dragons plot, littlefinger going to Harrenhal, Bronn heading the citywatch).
Of all the things you listed the only one that really disappoints me is The Chain, and the season isn't over yet, so who knows what they will do. Cutting Meera and Jojen is also a little disappointing (because they are a cool part of the book), but they really do nothing for the plot that can't be done by other characters, as has already been shown.
we dont know if they cut it out yet right?
I haven't heard anything either way, but in the books they foreshadow it throughout the book.
I don't buy these apologetics. Season 1 was mostly accurate to the books.
That doesn't really suprise me, Book 1 had a tighter storyline and was smaller in scope compared to book 2. With each book you start to introduce more characters, more locations, etc.
Yeah..I'm still pissed though
