Soooo it wouldn't be worth it to make a trip to filene's in Chicago?
No. However, FB is located by a lot of other decent stores in Chi. There is a good Nordstrom Rack nearby IIRC.
I was in my FB a couple months back and noticed the crap selection. In the past I have scored some pretty solid stuff. I asked a SA what the deal was and he said that they have totally stopped getting their "designer" shipments from Barneys and elsewhere. They still had some RLPL ties and a Zegna SC there from what I saw, but all of it was REAL ugly.
This is nonsense on many levels. FB was in bankruptcy when it was purchased by Syms two years ago. They have not severed ties with high-end stores, as I purchased a Brioni suit from a high-end retailer there last year. I have also seen Barney's items there last time I was in Boston. FB carries a bunch of crap, but they also purchase overstock and end of season items from anyone who will sell it to them, if the price is right.
The reference to "Filenes" is wrong for an additional reason. In 2006, Filene's stores were merged with Macy's, phasing out the Filene's name. Therefore, FB could not have ended its relationship with Filenes after Syms bought FB because has already ceased to exist years before the purchase.
rugby.com has an additional 20% code ("insideronly")
anyone know how big the medium jackets measure across the shoulders?
i'm probably a medium... but i'm thinking rugby runs a little trimmer than other brands... yes? no?
As far as I can see it- and I could be wrong - You are posting this as a PSA and you've got this for sale on B&S?
I don't think this is completely true. I saw new merchandise at a FB this weekend with Barney's tags and Wilkes Bashford tags. The Vault still has a pretty decent selection of discounted designer clothing and ties. Maybe it depends on the location.
In regards to your first statement I don't doubt that you were able to score your finds there in past years or even past months. I too have had some great stuff that I bought at my location within the last year. However, I am only telling you what the manager at my FB told me. He said that they have phased out all of their "high-end, designer" relationships. And I can say for fact that this is the case at my location. The selection speaks for itself.
In regard to your second statement, in reading my post I can see it made it sound like they severed their ties all at one time, immediately. I apologize for that. The severing of their relationships, again, per their SA/manager, has been gradual since their purchase by Syms.
Either way I'm sure there are still gems collecting dust in FBs across the country. However, as it has been told to me, they are not continually refreshing their stock of high-end merchandise.
Not to derail the discussion about FB, but Paul Stuart is giving a free $50 gift card to use in either of their Chicago stores:
Paul Stuart Chicago Promo
edit: I just read the caveats and the "Balance of purchase less than $50 not redeemable" - which I believe may lawyerspeak for $100 minimum purchase.
Hmmm good point. Can anyone tell us for sure? Still, not a bad deal.
I read that to mean that if you purchased something less than $50 with the gift card, you couldn't get the balance back in cash. For example, buy a $45 pair of socks and get $5 back.
I'm going down there after work so we'll see how it goes.
Nice! Keep us updated
I will be heading there in November and would love to snag something. How much do they want for a basic pair of slacks?
$50 minimum purchase is more like a deal compared to the $100 minimum. Please let us know how it works.
P. S. since I'm in the no purchase club, I have to minimize my spending with this gift card. After checking their website, I sadly found that the best bet would be a pair of $54.5 socks.
This won't be everyone's cup of tea, but these boots are incredibly comfortable, and goodyear stitched. Mine did not require any break in time at all
I am seriously considering getting another pair for non hunting purposes (with jeans/on snow days)
Just got home from Paul Stuart with my $80 pocket square
I was able to use the gift card without any problem and just had to pay the difference. I don't think they even knew it was a promotional item. So knock yourselves out on $55 a pair socks for $5
