Decided to take a risk and break in the 2298 Bourton. Definitely a good fit with medium weight socks. A little loose with thin socks but not nearly as bad as I expected. Loose feeling but not really getting heel slip.

I feel like I need to redo the cuffs on my pants with these shoes. Perhaps they are cut lower than other shoes I’ve owned.

still curious about more input on whether I could make a standard 4444 Bourton work without insoles.

In my experience that 4444 last comes up really large with lots of volume. If you went down half a size you ‘might’ be ok but I suspect (based on your previous comments) you may experience some heel slip. But everyone’s feet are different and the only surefire way of knowing is to try some.
those Bourtons on the 2298 look good by the way.

Thank you! Do you mean 1/2 size down from 2298/4497 like is usually suggested for the 4444 last, or an additional 1/2 size down from that?
