The Conistons look really nice, but I presume they'd not be wide enough for me. My Bourton's are just about wide/generous enough. 4497s in a 5 fitting is not wide enough for me and just doesn't fit well, but the 6 fitting equivalent does.
I agree with zippy on the pricing. Are you UK based? Rannochs can be had for £330 at the moment so definitely better value. I have 2 pairs of Grassmere and love them, but I didn’t spend anything like the amount you’re talking about.

Yep I'm UK based. I've seen Rannochs for even less than £330, but unfortunately not in my size (UK 7.5).

Unfortunately I've not seen the Grassmere heavily discounted (nor the Malton for that matter). 20% off RRP is the best I've seen.

After much consideration I've opted for the Grassmere. Not cheap, but cost per wear softens the blow somewhat. 20% off is better than nothing.

My footwear collection is small and I walk a lot, so the implications of several re-soles are a major consideration. This is where I think the Grassmere has an advantage over the Rannoch. As Humpty noted on the other page, with the veldtschoen you're re-stitching into the leather upper. I spoke with my local cobbler and he noted how this is problematic over several re-soles.

On the Rannochs - a stockist noted in email that it "appears that this item has now been discontinued". If you want a pair, get them while you can!

Thanks again for your advice.

Thanks. I quite like the aesthetics of both, but the Rannoch a little more appealing in terms of style.

Forgot to mention that having speed hooks is definitely an appeal over the Grassmere. One thing that put me off the Cheaney Pennine II is I found them annoying to un-lace and re-lace them to take the boots on/off. The Grassmere not having speed hooks isn't a dealbreaker though, having fewer eyelets than these other options.
I have both of them and I can't wear conistons either (too tight, sadly). I think they are both great if you're looking for a water resistant Winter boot. The Rannoch is very well made, tough as nails and very much a country boot for beating the hell out of. I have the Grassmere in black zug, and it has an "officer's boot" kind of feel if I want to polish it up a bit, so it can present nicely enough in a casual dress environment. I sometimes wear them with olive or military drab chinos and a sweater + wax jacket if I am going out for a wet night on the town. Again, as has already been said, depends on what's more aesthetically pleasing to you.

This is what I do to prevent that: During a resole, have your cobbler stitch a leather midsole to the welt. Then have him glue the rubber outsole to the midsole. This way you can resole the rubber sole over and over again without having to bother the welt.

I have the Newbury brogue which is on that last and I actually ended up going down half a size compared with my usual size. On their website Trickers say that it fits true to size but interestingly their Jermyn Street shop recommended going down half a size.
Exactly the same experience with sizing. Ordered Belgrave in 7 and 6.5 (free returns) and the 7, my standard size in EG, Church’s, and Cheaney, were definitely big. The 6.5 were the right fit throughout, with nice and small wiggle room in the toes.
