@Purplelabel can you please confirm that I should use a Small liner in a Medium Ashby? I keep reading that the slimmer Ashby requires a sized-down liner but I’d still rather hear it from someone who knows.

Secondly: buyer’s remorse? I haven’t taken the tags off the Ashby but a part of me is thinking I should’ve got a Beaufort with hood and liner. Am I wrong?

The liner should fit and yes, a Beaufort is better.

I’ve owned a few Barbour flannel tattersall shirts and they are wonderfully soft and comfortable. They also dress down nicely with denim when you don’t want to cosplay Downton Abbey.

Here in the US, you can pick-up factory over-runs or ‘as new’ shirts for under $40 on eBay - especially in the summer months.

My major complaint though is the sizing. I mean, I get that it is a ‘sporting’ shirt and the average customer is a middle aged tubby country gent. But they are cut so large that I’d end up having to narrow the chest and waist, shorten the sleeves, slim the arms all over and reduce the armholes. That’s a lot of work on a second hand shirt.

I’m either going to keep them for wearing under a jumper/sweater or see if I can source some of the fabric and get a few mtm somewhere.

I think the sizing is off a bit as well with there shirts, that or I have an odd body shape ?‍♂️

Thanks!

I put a bid on a shag-lined Border. Aside from not having raglan sleeves, I dig this one a lot. I may end up keeping both and still wanting a Beaufort, hahah.

Edit: Offer accepted. I got a great deal on the lined Border, if it is as described. Next up is to get some wax and a hood. Storm hood or standard snap-in? I'm leaning toward the bigger storm hood right now.

Waiting on my Border to arrive and wondering:

1. Is the Storm Hood or regular tartan=lined good going to be better if left snapped on the jacket?

2. While I enjoy doing my own waxing, if I am also getting some sleeve alterations done and a repair on a blown-out internal pocket, sending it off to be done doesn't cost much more. Is it better to send it direct to Barbour, drop it off at Orvis, send ot to New England Reproofers or have my tailor do the repairs and rewax it myself?

Thanks!

Could be anything.

Well, I guess so, if you don't really look at it, and don't know more than the most regular issue Barbours. There are clues though, in the detailing around the bellows pockets, the handwarmer pockets, the contrasting corduroy collar, the hanging loop on the outside of the back, the inside upper back details. I've never come across one like it, hence the question.

My new to me Border arrived today - I’m happy!

The lining may not stay in - I’m not that impressed by the snaps.

I also bought a hood. The colours look a little different, but after waxing it should match well, right?

Also, when they lengthen the sleeves, how do they do it? The fabric is a little frayed though an extra half inch in length would be nice.

Thoughts on sleeve length?

The lining will stay, don’t worry. Barbour lengthen the sleeve by attaching more fabric to the end of the cuff, I wouldn’t worry about yours they're similar to my Beaufort.

The factory sent me a pic of an extended cuff. I may do this, since it is fraying anyway. Maybe also get them to do Bedale style knitted inner cuff.

Here’s a pic with a jumper underneath. Do I need one or 1.5” added? I’m thinking of getting some Bedele-style knit cuffs added while I’m at it.
