I have been admiring Spier and Mackay suits and sport coats for a while. When I follow their measurement advice for the shoulders I come out with quite a small number for the shoulders 15 inches. I measure from one shoulder bone up around the curve of the back to the other side. When I look at the suit measurements the smallest shoulder length is 17.5 for a size 36 suit. I have a size 40 chest. Do I just have abnormally small shoulders? Do I need to order custom? should I order a size 40 and have the shoulders altered? Or am I missing something between the jacket measurement and my shoulder measurement? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

15 inches is very narrow for a 40 inch chest. Are you measuring yourself or is someone else measuring you?
Probably the best thing to do is to measure a tailored jacket that fits you.

It sounds like you maybe aren’t measuring the true end to end. Generally, S&M does a good job keeping shoulders proportional to the rest of the jacket, so I’d go off the chest size. You can always return it. I wouldn’t plan I getting the shoulders altered, because it is expensive and difficult to do.

Best thing is to put the jacket on and see how you look. Go off of chest measurement. The shoulder seams don't always have to hit the top of your shoulder bone (a concept that's subjective anyway)
