I know this thread is relatively common. But would appreciate your assistance.

If you were starting out building a professional wardrobe, how many suits would you consider a good lot? I was thinking 5-7...at least one different for each day of the week. The questions I pose to you:

1) How many suits would be the target/baseline number?
2) With that number...what would they be? (color/pattern/stripes/style...very macro description)

Thanks a bunch!

Can't go wrong there. Keep them solids too. And buy one at a time :p. Take your time with it. Because when you start out, more likely than not your first suit will not fit as well as you think it fits when you look back on it later on.
If I had bought 5-7 starting out it would pretty much kill my social life. XD

i'd say the basics are navy, light grey, medium grey, and dark grey. you can then get into patterns or other colors, but personally i'd just add more greys (i'd get sharkskins for the basics then add herringbones later).

I think if its a basic and you're starting out, you can get by for a little while wearing a suit twice a week. So if you need suits M-F, three would be nice, if you need suit M-Thurs w/ maybe a sportsjacket/blazer friday, then 2 + sportsjacket.

The starting two are a blue and a charcoal. Period.

You're better off buying 3-4 high quality suits and giving them at least a day of rest between wearings than buying 5-7 low quality suits that will look cheap/fall apart. Also, do not buy a black suit.

I guess it depends if you really ned to wear a suit everyday. If yes, then eventually you want at least 12 or so suits.

Starting out, I'd say 3- blue, charcoal and light grey.

It really depends upon your field and your personal style. If you are in a conservative job, then sure navy and grey.

I was in publishing for ages and got by just fine with a navy, four season wool, pinstriped suit, Blue blazer and, tan summer suit, and a Harris tweed jacket. A few other suits and jackets came and went but those could take me anywhere.

I own A LOT of suits, however are fairly inexpensive fashiony suits. I have grown up a bit and fallen more into my own style and developed a better taste and appreciation for craftsmanship. Thus, I have just begun to re do my entire wardrobe, all bespoke. I am beginning with the standards, charcoal and navy. I then plan to branch out to charcoal and navy pinstripes, or maybe chalk stripes, then from there a medium grey, medium blue, POW, and tweeds. I would say the best thing to do when building up your wardrobe is start with the most conservative, or classic, if you will, and then branch out from there. It would be a shame to land some sort of interview, or have to do a high profile presentation when all you have is a brown, green, and pink pow suit.

I'd say fashion wise it's a mix of conservative/messy and stylish. Nothing too out there. If I walked in with pink laces I'd probably get slapped.
