I purchased a pair of 10d Bayfields. I tried the shoe on a couple of times, and was once told that I could take the 10e down to a 9.5. The other time, the 10d fit just right. The shoes I bought feel tight, and small. Why did this happen?

1) Even if you get two pairs of shoes of the same size, there can be manufacturing differences that make them fit differently.
2) Shoes will stretch with wear and time. Perhaps the shoes you tried earlier were store demo shoes that many others had already tried on.
3) Your feet will swell up during the day. Shoes will become tighter in the evening compared to the morning.

There is another odd thing about the shoes. Is this normal of Chromexcel leather?

It appears the leather of one shoe is bubbling (I believe that is the term).
