I've never seen leather finished in this way before - the latest theory is elephant's scrotum:

Anyone know what it is?

I've personally never inspected an elephant's ******** that closely. But I think the texture of this leather will look incredibly beautiful after a few years of use and handling.

I don't know, what do an elephant's balls look like after you handle them for a few years? Tom

Initially, I was was of a mind that the source hide might be camelid in origin. Further investigation suggests my alternate theory, while novel, is incorrect.

Since some forum participants might be sensitive to the issue, I included an evidentiary link rather than the normal photo embedded with text.

Nice try, Tom, but I chose my words carefully.

Even a link was too much. Moreover, I think it says nothing about what the hide in question would look like when emptied of its contents and made into a valise.

I would guess on a water-based animal.
I saw this type of skin when I was in Africa last time on a "tourist-market" where they sold carry-on luggage bag in this type of skin.
Whale-skin would be my guess too.

maybe it's made of human skin like the Necronomicon from the Evil Dead Movies.
