Good afternoon,

I am looking to get a couple of casual shirts that I can dress up and down. I know the often recommended casual shirt of choice is the OCBD. And for good reason, I love the versatility. But, I just don't like button-down collars. I have tried and tried to make myself like them and I just can't. Does anyone wear them with a soft non-button down collar? I see a lot of Europeans (I'm American) wear casual shirts with soft collars that aren't button down collars. Was wondering how it might look on an OCBD. Or, should I stick with a poplin with a soft casual non-button down collar?

An OCBD by definition has a button down collar ("oxford cloth button-down"). So what you're really asking, I think, is whether you can wear a oxford cloth shirt without a button-down collar. Yes, of course you can.

Ah, yes that is indeed what I'm asking. Thanks for the reply. What are your thoughts on that vs a poplin for casual wear?

A textured fabric like an oxford is more casual than a poplin, so it's a good choice for a casual shirt. If you don't like the look of a button-down collar, you might consider a hidden button down collar so that the collar leaves stay down.
