I'll be spending a few days in New York City in a few weeks.

I've only been to NYC once when I was a kid, so it's practically like a first-time visit.

I'm planning to stay at The Knickerbocker (on Times Square). If I want to go out in Brooklyn, specifically to the Good Room in Greenpoint, is that area safe to frequent at night, and is it safe/possible to travel to and fro on the subway between that area and my hotel late at night/early morning? I'm trying to avoid taxi costs where possible but would obviously pay them if it means not getting mugged.

The answer is probably obvious to anybody who lives there, but as I said, I don't know at all what to expect.

-Yes, it is safe at night.
-Yes, it is safe to travel by subway. You will just need to make a few connections. Jump on the train from the TS area to Union Sq. Catch the L train to Lorimer. Then transfer to the G train 1 stop to Nassau and walk from there. You will be surprised at the crowds going and coming from that part of Brooklyn.

Map of subway is below:

Your issue will less likely be crime than time. While the NY subway technically runs 24/7, at very late hours the wait between trains can be really long. Sometimes agonizingly long. A half hour would not be unusual. That's a long time watching rats scurry along the tracks. And every transfer doubles the potential for long waits.

After a night of clubbing you may decide to weigh the cost of lost sleep (and the secondary potential for crime or just uncomfortably weird passengers) against the cost of an Uber, which at that hour will get you back to your hotel in minutes; the expense difference will amount to the price of another cocktail. Often it's best to take the subway to the gig, then taxi home.
