NYC Chinatown Dim Sum

So I have a date tonight and we decided to go someone that we don't normally frequent and we decided upon Chinatown.

I've been to dim sum on the weekend for lunch a few times; but, where is the best place to go at like 830 or 9 at night?

Dim Sum's mainly a lunch meal. Only places that might have it at night would be somewhere that serves it a la carte off a menu. Dim Sum A Go-Go is the standby for something like that.

My preference for Dim Sum in the city is Golden Unicorn, but they only do daytime lunch Dim Sum.

+1. you might try Shanghia food, soup dumplings and noodles and that kind of small things, not exactly dim sum, but more common at night than dim sum. I am a big fan of Joe's Ginger on Mott street.

Sounds like you are trying to intentionally "slum it", so you can try Joe's Shanghai for soup dumplings. It's touristy but the dumplings are good.

I don't like Dim Sum A Go Go, it's just weird ordering dim sum and not getting it off of a cart. When I'm in NYC, I go to one of those dim sum places on Bowery.

side note, one of those dim sum places on Bowery has their sign in a RUN DMC style logo, that's pretty cool.

That's pretty funny, because Chung King House of Metal, where Run DMC made all their pioneering recordings, was in Chinatown.

I've had it, and have to give a thumbs down. Ha gao (shrimp dumplings) on the other hand are like pieces of heaven. I also agree with what others have said -- dim sum is for lunch. Going and sharing with at least one other person, and getting it off the cart is the way to go.

You all are wrong. Dim sum is a morning thing. Like 8:30am Sunday morning kind of a thing.

I love chicken feet, and snails, and tripes, and pork ribs, etc. They're what eating dim sum is all about--tasty little morsels that require concentration and dexterity to extract their delicious goodness.

Speaking of which, it's been a long time. I'm gonna have to trek down to NYC Chinatown for some dim sum this weekend.

some random thoughts:
- dim sum for us is a classic sunday brunch. However, it should make a nice late supper.
- joe's was good last century.
- new green bo was good last year.
- The last couple of years I've played in a tennis tournament at the USTA center in flushing. After the tournament I head over to the flushing dim sum palaces which I find to be better and less expensive than ctown. This year I opted for some real szechuan food at a small, hole in the wall that I read about on the internet. It was great going down but I just about died on the way home.

+1 Hit it right on the head. That's the only way to eat Dim Sum. And chicken feet, pork rice noodle rolls and tripe are the best IMO.
