If you like the Italian hot dog, you should try the Italian cheeseburger: An Italian sub bun, a cheeseburger cut in half and put in the bun the long way, fries, peppers, ketchup and mayo in a single sandwich. Fuckin delicious.

That I have not had. Italian hot dogs, by the dozen, but that's a new one on me.

Right you are, sir.http://www.topdoghotdogs.com/ I may have to order some Top Dogs, some Cole's (formerly Royal) Coffee, and maybe a couple of those oven-ready half-baked pies Zacharys sells and a keg of Bison Ale, and have a Berkeley Nostalgia Gorge-Fest.

Japanese hot dogs are the best! If you're ever in Tokyo, check them out.

I've had a Chicago dog at Shake Shack and found it a little 'busy', what with the 10 or so ingredients. Chicago folks said reserve judgment b/c it wasn't made w/ a true Chi-town tubesteak. Do they really eat these (lettuce, tomato, chopped onion and green bell pepper, cucumbers, bright yellow mustard, neon green relish, celery salt and 'sport' peppers) on a regular basis? Pls tell us more about the HD scene in the Windy City...

I don't remember the lettuce, but add chili and cheese to that and it is a hot dog with the works at wriggly field. hmmmm....

there seem to be hot dog places all over the area, all with good HDs, beefy and firm, most often grilled. I probrably have one more often than a hamburger, since I moved here. cheese, bacon, chili, onions, are all common toppings, aside from the various vegetables.

brats - sort of thick german style sausages are also readily available, I think with the same toppings - I haven't had enough hot dogs to graduate to brats yet.

As I understand it, brats are a whole 'nother scene, baby! Simmered in beer and onions or grilled. I think they require beer....

edit: just remebered SNL skit w/ Chris Farley, George Wendt, etc. as bears fans doing a cable show (?) from their local tavern....

Here in the windy city we do take our dogs seriously. A standard Chicago dog has mustard, onion, relish(which I do not like), tomato and sport peppers (if you desire). More than that, and you are not eating at a real Chicago hot dog joint. Ketchup is not allowed, unless you are some schlub from the suburbs then it is understandable. The bun has to be steamed and is usually an S. Rosen's. I have been to many different stands and have never heard of the 'shake shack'. The best places are probably, Hot Doug's, Gene and Jude's on the outskirts of the city, Clark Street Dog (although very trendy) and the late Demon Dogs (RIP). There are many others, but these are some I could think of now.
