Horns, I'm glad you won that battle. I'm not surprised to hear of addiction stories to this stuff - it is extremely satisfying, must be something in the chemistry that's titillating the right neurons or something...

It's basically sugar and fat with some cocoa and hazelnut flavouring.
One day's entire caloric intake requirements in a conveniently small package. No wonder we're genetically predisposed to like this kind of stuff. Of course, there was no such thing as costco when our genetic code was put together...

"hazelnut flavouring"... Come on. It's full of delicious and healthy real hazelnut paste.

The fact that it's sugar and fat doesn't fully explain the powerful effect it has on people. There's plenty of fat and sweet junk food out there but only Nutella is true kryptonite material.

I don't know what it was/is, but it definitely flips a switch in your brain.

I have to admit that I have never tried it. Over the years I have often picked up a jar and put into my shopping cart only to change my mind and put it back on the shelf.

This thread was convincing me to go ahead and buy some...until Horns admission of his jar-a-day habit. Now I'm scared.

In honour of this thread I bought a freshly baked loaf of French bread and a jar of Nutella yesterday morning. Both are gone today. Still buzzing.

Have you ever had a croque monsieur but it's just toasted brioche covered with Nutella? It's awesome.

It was all a true addiction. I went from buying it retail, to buying it in Costco, then to having a guy at a cheese shop buying large jars for me by the case.

I now haven't touched it in 4-5 months. I also now believe in a higher power and have made amends to those I have wronged, but I haven't touched the stuff and will get my 6-month pin soon.

Seriously, though, I was eating that much of that stuff. "Hydrogenated palm oil" . . .

You are lucky to not have gone into cardiac arrest. That palm oil is deadly stuff yet is the basis of so much Asian, African and Brazilian cooking.

But of course !!

Here's a ghetto chocolate turnover I love to enjoy with morning coffee:
- cut out edges of a slice of fresh and moist white or wheat bread
- deposit a nice spoonful of Nutella in center
- fold over like a big dumpling, press edges with fingers to seal
- in toaster until golden brown
