Time for an updated poal (if anything, hopefully this can serve as an excuse for me to increase my #): how many shirts do you have? And how many do you have in actual rotation?

I've got 10. It's not much, but they all are MTM or fit really well.

Four white, four blue (two ocbd, one stripes, one checks), one pink ocbd, one orange and white stripes.

For those of you that use a professional shirt laundry, I advise the Rule of 7: 7 in the closet, 7 in the laundry hamper, and 7 at the cleaners.

How did I come up with this?

About 20 years ago, I had a client with 2 custom shirts in his closet. Every evening at around 5:45 (we close at 6:00) he'd show up, strip off one shirt and collect one freshly laundered shirt. One day he showed up and his shirt wasn't ready....a large transformer had caught fire in our area and the power was off for the better part of the day. He threw a fit that his shirt for the following day wasn't ready.

More then 30 is actually unnecessary. If we not speak about duplicates.

Per week? Per month? It's 6-8 in week, so about 25-30 a month. I wash them with my own hands so I have little time to spare for more than that.

wow. I really thought there would be some high numbers. I recently bought all new hangers for my shirts...I bought 80 hangers and have a few left over..so ive got about 75. I guess i should slow down or thin the herd. About half of them are ermenegildo zegna, the rest a nice mix of borrelli, charvet, and turnbull.

theres still a few empty slots for a new kiton or attolini. ;)

ya...I'd say in the 50 range. I'm long and lean so almost nothing fits me OTR. 95% of them are custom made.

I couldn't begin to guess how many I have. But I have five or so per season that typically make up the core rotation.

Lately I've found I need fewer and fewer as my tastes slip back toward the simplicity of solids, simple blue-and-white stripes and blue gingham.

In regular rotation ~40, but they get swapped out with their variations (usually color) ever so often.

I think about 25-30 is a good solid rotation, plus throw in 10-15 seasonals or shirts that don't get worn to often and it's more than enough.

Some great responses here; many thanks for sharing! At first, I thought some of you were joking, but then again, this is SF.

I think I have a little over 30 myself; a little over half of those in rotation. I try to keep the number as low as possible though, by giving those away to charity that I don’t really wear anymore (e.g. don’t like the style or details anymore). Similarly, I have also given quite a few away that were MT online and came out less than stellar.

Seems like I may use this thread to consider getting some more. Mind you, although I don’t apply the OneShirt concept, all my shirts are white, blue or a combination thereof. I can’t risk jeopardizing my simple wardrobe structure.

At least once a year I go through and clean out anything I don't wear regardless of it's age. I took probably 25 to the Cancer League recently. After that I seem to keep about 45 in regular rotation and another 15 for special seasonal or events.

I imagine i will be ordering striped shirts this fall, especially pencil stripes.
