Nudie RRDS Sizing Info

I posted this question a few times in the "quick questions" thread but few people acknowledged me or gave me any good advice. I'm hoping someone who knows Nudie denim well or someone with some RRDS experience can help me out here.

How should my Nudie RRDS fit right out of the box? Should they be "hardly able to button them?"

I just got a size 32 that is loose on the waist right out of the box. A 31 would fit almost perfect right out of the box, but they only have 30 in stock. The 30's would be quite tight out of the box. Should I go with the 30's or try to find a 31?

What's the waist shrinkage and stretching like on the RRDS? I almost always soak them for a while to get some shrinkage out of the way before I get them hemmed and to get rid of some of the starch. If I get a size 30 and I soak them, will they be entirely too small?

I think I'm going to try to find a size 31 because I don't want to spend $275 on a pair of jeans that might be too small. Is this the best route to go?

Lastly, since Denim Bar doesn't have a 31 in stock, where can I exchange these Nudies if I ultimately decide on going with the 31? They're brand new, still tags on them and all. Are there any stores out there that will exchange these for me even though I bought them somewhere else?

Thanks for any help!

I found my RRDS to stretch quite significantly. much moreso than my samurais. if you're able to button them, they'll be fine.

The jeans will stretch as much as they need to. So, odds are, both the 30 and 31 waste jeans will end up stretching to the same point before you're done with them. The only thing to consider here is that the thighs and legs of the 30 jeans are a bit slimmer (just a bit) than the 31 waste. As an example, I got mine in a 32, which were quite tight when I first put them on. I could have maybe, barely, fastened a 31 around my waste, but I found no reason to go a size smaller. The thighs/legs of a 31 and 32 are the same, and the waste would end up being the same size in the end anyway. So why suffer through the discomfort of jeans that I can barely fasten in the beginning? In your case, however, going to size 30 drops the measurements of the rest of the jeans just a touch as well (we're talking a fraction of an inch here), so that's something to consider. If you can fasten up a 30 without too much trouble, that may be the size for you. In my opinion, go with the size that you can button without too much trouble, but that feels too tight to wear comfortably right off the bat.

That being said, soaking the jeans right away will not really shrink the waste much at all. That will only happen once the jeans stretch some and they shrink back to the original size. Just as a rule of thumb, 80% of cotton shrinkage happens vertically. This means that most of the shrinkage in garmets happens in the length, not in the width. Just something to keep in mind. Honestly, the best thing to do is not worry about shrinkage. If you ever end up washing them, you can always stretch the length back out when they're wet, and the waste will stretch back within a couple of days on wear. Denim stretches a LOT. And don't get rid of the startch. It will wear out slowly, and that's what gives you the crisp creases and honeycombs as you wear them. That's kind of the whole point to raw denim. If you hem them, leave them a touch longer than your ideal length if you plan to wash them in the future. Like I said, you can stretch them about 95% of the way back to the original length while they're wet. You'll want a touch extra length to be safe, and also to let them stack a bit at the bottom. And you can also consider cuffing them if they're a bit long at first?

And as far as buying them, check cultizm.com ... that's the best site out there. You'll get the jeans for a great price, and you'll have them in probably two days. I think I paid about $200 for mine, shipped. They're great people to work with. Let me know if you have any more questions.

the waist will stretch as needed. My biggest issue by far is thigh room. Thighs hardly stretch in jeans, maybe 3/8", so plan on that. The waist will stretch out in just a few wear.

That was one of the most informed and helpful replies I've ever received. Thanks very much Naylor.

Love this site, but for Nudies www.mynudies.com is the place to ask Nudie questions.
