No thinsulate for me!, declared My friend Alex when he arrived
at my office on a particularly frigid day during the mini Ice Age
that had descended upon Chicago in the 80s. He was dressed in a
bold patterned Balmacaan, which must have weighed 20 pounds,
topped off with a fur ushanka, a reference to his Russian heritage,
no doubt. Against stereotype, Alex was a highly successful database
consultant and published technical author who admitted to owning
400 ties and shopped at the legendary Dunhill Tailors in New York.
I have not been in touch with him for years, but understand that he
has changed careers and is now an antique appraiser, a profession
more in keeping with his sartorial inclinations. For those among you
who eschew such contemporary cold weather solutions as the
Storm System, I offer this sublime example from Savile Row:

i dont see the point of thinsulate either, i live in toronto, canada and even canvas converse shoes + socks are warm enough for me in winter (but of course i will wear boots if it gets wet and slushy due to the porous nature of canvas, but my leather boots don't have thinsulate either and they are quite warm), so where do people live that need to have thinsulate (or wool or sherling) in their boots? the arctic?
