May 2012's edition of GQ featured an article about a professional stylist, Llaria Urbinati, in which she (the stylist) insists that men should not wear belts with suits because it looks "bulky." I didn't immediately take off my belt in the middle of the grocery store and renounce the leather apparatus for good, but I am starting to become less suspicious of her claim. I do feel like it adds bulk. Somebody on SF tell me whether I should be averse to bulk.

And, by the way, no "pants on the ground" jokes; Belts, at least for me, serve no practical purpose because my pants are tailored and stay up on their own accord.

    Thanks,
    MatthewJoe

She is probably not suggesting you take off your belt or wear belted trousers without one. More likely, she is referring to the traditional English custom that suit trousers be made with side tabs or to be worn with braces. Most ready-to-wear brands eschew this rule, though. Also Italian tailors seem to have no issue whatsoever with making belted suit trousers, even preferring it.

Serious question, no snark, is your entire style based on rules?

    No.

But "rules" are part of the language one adopts when he chooses to dress in classic tailored clothing. So, it's best to understand them well before attempting any creativity. Put another way: get your grammar, spelling and vocabulary down before trying to write a poem.

When I wasn't pouring out Coca-Cola bottles to fill up with dip spit, yes. I pulled it out of my shopping cart when I got tired of staring at my feet in line... dick.

That's why they make suits without button loops.

IMO a belt with a suit is ok for business wear, provided that the belt is slim and kept at 1" width, such as a plaque slider belt. I go beltless for evening or "fashion forward" occasions. Just my own rule.

I swing both ways when it comes to wearing belts, but mainly because some of my trousers have belt loops and some don't. I was very hesitant the first time i had some tailored without belt loops but now it doesnt bother me.

I do think if your pants have belt loops you should use them though, especially if your not wearing a suit.

Look, it's simple, wear a belt with trousers with belt loops. Don't with ones that don't. Done.

Like most questions that elicit completely contradictory responses, the answer is always "simple."
