Yesterday I was at a small shop in Brussels, selling beautiful clothing accessories and stuff, called Beaumonde.

The sales rep seemed to praise Nicky ties highly, and told me they were amongst the very best, along with Altea -which he sold as well; in his (not so humble) opinion, they have to be compared with Borelli and stuff.

What do you think ?

i have been very happy with my Nicky ties - was chatting ties yesterday with norcaltransplant who is equally happy with his. However - do not pay retail for them. Norcal scoops them up for under $30 in clearance stores in NYC, and, for those of us banished to the world outside the US, Lance at VCH regularly has them for 50 and under.

I just paid 50 EUR for mine (60 USD), coming from a full 88 EUR (ca 100 USD) at retail price. Sounds reasonable anyway. How would you compare Nicky ties with (presumed) top-notch ties ?

That retail is lower than US retail for Nicky (~$135-$150). Compared to other standard construction ties (ie, non-seven fold variants), Nicky is certainly among the best. I've got half a dozen or so of them. There's something of a Nicky cult around these parts.

Agree - Nicky are good ties. I have a couple and they knot and travel well.

Altea, not so much...

My understanding was Altea makes RLPL ties?

Sounds right to me as the RLPL Italian ties have taken a definitve fall in quality from the English versions made by Turnbull (wearing one today). I wouldn't buy another RLPL Italian make tie at any price.

As for Nicky, one of favorite tie makers of all. I have a few dozen of them and wear them constantly.

Nicky makes very good ties. I would say they are comparable to Canali, though not quite as heavy.

I also understand that Altea makes RLPL ties, but the Altea branded ties I've seen at Marshalls have been closer in quality to XMI non-Platinum ties (and slightly below Brooks Brothers quality) than they are to RLPL. Perhaps Altea makes ties at several quality levels, but the ones I've seen were not impressive.

I'm a bit on the fence, actually. I love only one of two ties I have from Nicky. One is a woven with navy medallions on a cream background, and the other is a satin-finished purple striped tie. The satin-finished one ties a bad and small knot for me in a four-in-hand, and I just don't like the way it's constructed, even leaving aside its aesthetic deficiencies. But I love the woven one, as it ties perfectly, with a good sized FIH knot. But yes, it is highly regarded, so it's "worth" it in that sense.

Earthmover, I have a satin-finished Nicky as well (blue with silver pindots) and have encountered the same issues with knotting. Even when I tried a Prince Albert, which usually produces a more elongated knot, it didn't come out quite right. It took an extra wrap, actually.
