I used a bit of Smith's Leather Balm on the heel counters of my Brown CXL Manito shoes. I don't think I'd use Smith's again for regular conditioning but the results weren't bad. I was hoping the heels would become more pliable and wrap around my feet better. So far, so good. The shoes feel a little more secure on my feet.

Do you guys get a thicker or different cut of CXL than other brands? These shoes have been kinda brutal to break in but in a good way. The creasing has been fantastic, BTW. Non of the bad grain break that usually comes with CXL.
How about a picture or two? I agree either the leather starts better or is selected better or more likely a combination of the two.

^I think you are looking at a 55 last Ranger boot then. I'm not sure if they offer their casual leathers in the Ranger MTO though. The logger heel is much higher than the dogger, which is already pretty high compared to brands like White's.
Thanks for the info. I don’t want the aggressive lug sole which I thought was the reason it was higher than the dogger heel. I ordered the mini lug

If you ordered the 430, then you should be getting the 430 heel cap on those boots. That heel cap will bring the dogger around the same range as the logger. I believe the Ranger on the 55 last comes stock with the 430 and an aggressive heel.

No pics, as there isn't much to show off. The fit is a bit better though. I've had my Manitos on for at least 2 hours and they are still pretty secure on my feet.

My biggest issues with my Manitos is laces. I don't like how leather laces look on them, so I switched them to some cotton flat laces. The flat laces don't get secure enough, so I bought short round boot laces. Those stay on but they get shredded by the eyelets in about 2 weeks time. Kinda frustrating.

Actually, yes, we use a thicker tannage in CXL compared to most other brands in our space. And I will say we are very picky with our clicking.

I like waxed cotton.

I do too. I just can't seem to find flat waxed laces in a 35-40 inch length. The flat cotton laces were listed as waxed but they are certainly not haha. Oh well. I like the shoes regardless. It's a small gripe considering how cool these shoes are.

That's awesome. I've always heard Horween ships the same CXL to all buyers but I believe you. The shoes definitely prove it.

Shuyler,
On my MTO Robert boot order. Will Nicks install a logger heel instead of a dogger heel if I request it? I much prefer the logger heel.

thanks in advance,
Mark Ellingsworth
Hey Mark, just to clarify you want like a ranger heel like this?

They do, but you can order different thicknesses. Like we aren’t ordering the same thickness as a Thursday, for example. Through a process called skiving (which is basically shaving the leather) they make it thicker or thinner depending what you want. It is one of the reasons why our shoes are expensive. Thinner leather may not necessarily be cheaper, though it often is, but is easier to work with for both people and machines when making the boots. Thicker leather is harder to work with and requires some processing that increases throughput time in manufacturing, reducing the number of boots one can make with the same amount of labor, comparatively.

That is an in between length for Guarded Goods waxes laces. If you want paracord, Pisgah will make custom lengths. Making your own is easy enough but they are finished nicely.

After 2 months of sometimes daily wear I'm really convinced of chormexel. It is indeed very thick and the creasing isn't that bad, as some say about cxl. What I like is the water resistance of the leather compared to my veg tans.

Awesome patina building on that leather.
