Questions for you:

-what do you mean by "button downs?"
Around here a buttondown is a shirt with a collar that buttons down
-what is your budget?

And aren't buttondowns by themselves considered non formal?

I'm a big fan of steven allen. They'd fit somewhere above Hickey but below Thom Browne. I think SA shirts combine the classic look with slim fit better than BoB which tend to be a bit garish for my taste.

My preference is for BB's OCBDs but, PRL's offerings are also nice...and reasonably priced, if bought on discount!

The Polo OCBD has new fabric this season which is much softer than before. I always though the Polo oxford cloth was softer than BB, but now it is quite a bit more so. The Custom fit is an improvement over the BB slim fit too.

If you prefer a stiffer fabric the Lands End Hyde Park is pretty rustic feeling. The tailored fit is cut a lot trimmer than the BB slim fit without being as shrunken as Thom Browne or Band of Outsiders. The armhole on the last LE OCBD I ordered is surprisingly high for a low cost RTW offering.
