Nice carving board

Sometimes when we entertain I prefer to serve a big roast or braise and carve it at the table so that I'm not rushing around throwing stuff on plates. I also like the convivial atmosphere that a nice carved meat brings to a gathering. Problem is, that I don't know where to get a nice carving board that will look good on the table, and a beat up kitchen cutting board really doesn't give the same feel. Anybody know a good source?

Just find a carpenter near you. I actually know a retired one in Marin, but I'd have to get back in touch with him. I can if you'd like. I'm sure if you searched for reclaimed wood on craigslist you'd find a bunch who do nice work though. That is unless there is some specific cutting board function that only a master in the specific art of cutting boards, as opposed to general woodworking could accomplish (no sarcasm). My lazy cousin makes really beautiful ones from wood that's been under water in Alabama creeks for 100 years or something, but we're still waiting for the one he made as a birthday present for me 2 years ago, so I can't really recommend him.

This is SF, we are used that sort of thing.

I have this one, and pretty much only use it to carve roasts or birds. It's reversible - one side has the indentation for a bird and the other is flat. I imagine you could find something similar in different types of wood if you would prefer something more fancy.

I saw a really nice one at the Heath Ceramic shop a few weeks ago, but then yesterday it was gone and the guy pretended it never existed. Is your cousin's last name Ambrosi?

cutting boards have to be made from specific material, not just any carpeter can do it.

Two things: First, a block like this is going to be very heavy and not easy to carry when bringing a roast from the kitchen to the table. Second, it doesn't have any grooves to catch the juices from whatever is being carved. Can't have meat juice all over the dinner table. I have one of these too, but it has a permanent place on the counter. It's not easy to move around.
