Paul Krugman may not be right about everything but one place where he's spot on is that Ferguson is pompous, shallow, and superficially relevant as a researcher.

Low "self-belief" is the cause of Western decline? Really? That is just about the stupidest argument I have ever heard. That is Pauly Shore dumb. That is the "The Secret" of historical analysis.

Of course a civilization in decline isn't going to publish as much self-praising literature as a civilization at its peak. Correlation vs. causation, anyone?
