Anyone see the Flyers game? A banana was thrown at Wayne Simmonds. Hope they find that stupid bastard.

Racism is alive and well in Canada, though from what you'd hear from many Canadians, racism is a purely southern/Quebec affair.

Ah, the eternal pessmist. As a Londoner I can say the vast majority of people around here aren't racist. Much like any place on the planet earth, antisocial and backwards thinking is present in some form. No need to get your panties in a twist.

Simmond's response summed it up well; that he is above it and won't comment any further. The more we flail our hands in the air and decry the barbaric and ignorant forces of racism, the more this clown gets his 15 minutes of fame. In other words: ignorant asshole does something ignorant and assholish, rest of the world moves on.

Racists are everywhere. Sometimes people aren't really racist, just stupid, and doing shit to get a laugh. When Kevin Weeks played for the Rangers I was disgusted by the comments made at every game he played in from fans all around me. Some games I sat in the blues, others I sat with the Blue bloods...didn't matter. Its a shame, but you'll find assholes everywhere, I wouldn't say that its a "London, Ont" thing.

My issue is more with what I perceive as a smugness on behalf of many Canadiens regarding racism who consider it a largely American problem. Although were far from a xenophobic and racist nation as a whole, plenty of work remains to be done and I don't think calling these things "isolated incidents" and then sticking your head in the sand is a good move.

must be a montreal thing, i've never heard the american = racist, canadian = not thing. i think nyr was correct when he alluded to people just being idiots and not necessarily identifiable racists.

I said a "perceived smugness" not an "explicitly stated racism".

Holy shit, guys are dropping left right and centre to suspensions and its not even the regular season.

    Shelley - preseason + 5 games - boarding
    PL3 - preseason + 1 game - boarding
Staubitz - pending - checking from behind
    Wisniewski - pending - headshot
    Boyes - 2 preseason games - headshot

Shanny's not messing around. I wonder if/when/how this will affect player behaviour on the ice.

I like it. A lot of these guys are repeat offenders anyways and it's good to send a message. Shanny's predecessor didn't have the respect of the players or the fans because he was inconsistent and biased from the get-go. I said when he took over that Shanny needed to take the bull by the horns from day one and send a clear message to the players and he has.

^ I agree, Shanny and the league needs to set the tone early to send a message to all the players. I just hope they remain consistent during the regular season.

I thought hockey fans (who are not, admittedly, the sharpest tools in the shed as a group) gave Campbell way too much credit for how difficult his job as a disciplinarian was. Disciplining players for dangerous hits it's pretty goddamn easy. If a hit is reckless or illegal, you suspend the guy. The problem with Campbell is that he treated every hit like he was a prosecutor trying to establish jurisprudence to bring a case to trial. As such, he started getting into stuff like previous offences and legalistic interpretations of the rule book. In the worst cases this "discipline" turned into a comedy if errors such as Chara not being suspended because he had "no previous offenses" (which, following this logic, he will never be suspended at all because he will never have committed an offense) and Matt Cooke not being suspended for his hit on Savard because Mike Richards wasn't for his hit on David Booth. This guy was an idiot and he made a mockery of his position. I can't state that more emphatically.

What Shanny is doing is right. If your hit doesn't pass the smell test, you're suspended. Period.

I'm already in one that's going to take up most of my time but if I wasn't I'd be down. Had a lot of fun playing last year.

Word to the wise, however -- Yahoo's default settings need some tweaking. The lack of IR spots and the rather limited roster means that injuries can have a dramatic impact on your "games played" quite quickly.

Yea, I was going to make a custom league. Yahoo's default stats are not enough for more serious fans.

I'm loving these videos from Shanny.

"...this is a clear violation of rule X, which states X. I've also taken into consideration factors X and X. For these reasons, I'm suspending this person for X games. Suck my balls." OK, I added the last part, but you can almost hear him say it. Especially for the Boyes hit - "I believe his assertion that he didn't mean to make contact with the head, however, too fucking bad, you're suspended and are now a repeat offender. Suck it."

This is pretty refreshing stuff, and a great move by the NHL. Seems like violent hockey culture is the biggest turnoff for folks these days, so having a liked and respected figure lay it out in an accessible format like this is an awesome PR move.

edit: hahahah holy shit preseason + 8games for wiz. didnt he headshot some guy when he was with the ducks a few years back? hell of a repeat offender, and it was a pretty dirty play. whats the most campbell ever dished out?

edit again: jagr comes out of nowhere???
