As much as I like Dion Phaneuf's size, skating, and hitting, he seems like a guy who will just never understand positional play at this level.

Big trade for the Canucks, Samuelsson & Sturm to Panthers for Booth, Reinprecht & 3rd round pick.

I like it. Sturm was basically a waiver player a year ago and Samuelsson has never impressed me that much despite decent production. Booth is an exciting player with a lot of offensive upside. He also has had some concussions issues, but that's becoming so common in the league that it's barely a reason to pass over a guy nowadays. Reinprect is a decent 40 pt centre and the 3rd pick is a nice toss in.

It's a good trade for the Canucks but Reinprecht will not be on the roster, he's going straight to the wolves. A 2 mil cap hit for that guy isn't going to happen.

The third round pick is the same one we traded for Chris Higgins last year, so we basically just get that back. The deal shakes out as,

    To Van:
    Higgins, Booth, Reinprecht

    To Fla:
    Samuelsson, Sturm, Evan Oberg

    Pretty solid.

good show by the oilers last night. no way the nooge gets sent down now. also, lol habs, bad luck on the missed call on grabo's tying goal.

blue jackets manage to shit the bed with one minute left, painful. looks like mason is the new raycroft; arniels probably going to be the first coaching change.

Perhaps J. Martin will be the next after...

I'm not usually a fan who hits the panic button quickly but I think the Habs might do well to do a light rebuild this season, make a coaching change, and come back next year. They have a good young core (Price, Subban, Maxpac) and decent prospects but they will only be successful if they jettison some bad contracts and free themselves from Martin's defensive system. I wonder if Kirk Muller or Patrick Roy would be interested in the gig? (a dream, I know...)

Elsewhere in the league: Washington looks unbeatable, Blue Jackets are one of the worst teams I've seen in the past few years, the Philly fans are (unsurprisingly) getting ready to turn on Bryz, and I think Boston is finally coming to grips with how much the stars had to align for their Cup run last year. I think Vancouver has a good shot as making it back to SCF but it looks like it was a one-off thing for the Broons.

Went on Calgarypuck to see how a van-hostile fanbase interpreted the Booth deal. Most of them think Vancouver won the deal by a mile if Booth stays healthy and stays the 20+ goal scorer he should be. Unrelated note, that place is hilarious; there was a thread on the Weber hit from behind fine and there were people honestly arguing that Hansen dove head first into the boards to draw the call.

There are rumours that Turris is getting moved, notwithstanding what was said at the beginning of the season by Yotes management. Interested parties include the Flames, Islanders and Canucks - again - which would mean Gillis just waited til the season started to make all his offseason moves.

Green had the best game I've seen him play in recent memory. Also glad to see OV was able to get in the box score. Both helped out this week's fantasy effort :slayer:

Names being tossed around in re: Turris are Josh Bailey (most likely) and Chris Tanev.

I learned awhile ago not to visit hockey boards dedicated to a single team. those places are some of the worst incubators of retardedness and group think on the internet. I'd love to say it's just as bad in baseball/basketball/football, but it just isn't. Hockey fans are the worst.

love it when WJC alumni make it in the bigs. markstrom was a beast for sweden, glad to see he's developing into something worthwhile in FLA. so many WJC goalies do not...

now montreal on the other hand, that markov signing is looking fucking brilliant. hell even the woywitka waive is looking like a dumb move. how long before heads roll?

The Markov signing was always a high risk/high reward signing. If he comes back and stays healthy he'll be a 50-60 point defenceman again. He's worth the money and I never had that big of an issue with the contract in the first place. I also find it ironic that other teams in the Northeast ragged on this deal when the Leafs were giving Connolly 5mm and the Bruins were re-signing a concussed Savard to a long-term deal.

As far as the Habs go, though....well, they pretty much suck. I predict three losses coming up against Philly and Boston and Martin getting canned. I think Martin is good at taking mediocre teams and making them good via his defensive system, but he just totally lacks any motivational component to his coaching arsenal and his teams (Florida, Ottawa) often lack an identity.

The Habs aren't going to loose another 3 straight! They have some talent, they just got to get it together... it might involve Martin leaving, but who's going to replace him. Muller would be great I think, but I don't see that happening in Montreal! And if Martin has a defensive coaching style... where's their defense?!

They'll still bounce back and make the playoffs in the end :nodding:

I'm more curious to see if the Blue Jackets go 0-for-October.
