I am clueless newbie trying to move away from Banana Republic clothes, and hoping that ebay can help me with this task. Can anyone tell me whether these items are any good and have the potential to be good deals? I work in a business casual law firm, but would like to mix things up by wearing suits every once in a while. I would like to find suits that are more on the modern side. Thanks.

That stuff is all rather underwhelming. Try forum searches on Canali, Corneliani, and Isaia as suggestions for decent modern-but-not-silly suits. Try ebay, Sierra Trading Post (STP) and Virtual Clothes Horse for vendors of suits and shoes. There are lots of threads on decent business casual if you check the archives.

The shoes from argentina are almost definitely fake. I say almost definitely, because it is somewhat possible they're licensed crap for the argentina market, and therefore "gray market" in the U.S.A.

In any event, they're nothing like the shoes from those brands as sold or legitimately available in the U.S.A.

The mugler suit is fine, but it is going to finish a little bit higher, i think.

The brands that dah238 mentioned are all better than the brands in the links you provided. In addition to the sources mentioned, you might want to check filene's basement, marshall's, century, or whatever brand of discount stores that are in your area.

Thanks. This feedback is very helpful in trying to set up my "ebay mental filter" so that I can quickly filter through the crap.

I have to admit that I have spent a few hundred dollars on ebay over the past few weeks buying shoes, ties and a few other things--hopefully I am not getting screwed. At the risk of making an ass out of myself, here are some of the things that I've purchased (please don't be too hard on me):

I don't mind spending $400-$500 for second hand suits and sport coats, but obviously don't want to spend the money on fakes. Is ebay even worth the browsing time? Living in a second tier metropolitan area (Raleigh-Durham, NC), there is not as much of a selection of high end discounted clothes as one would find in the big cities.

This brings up something about which I've always wondered: who makes Louis Vuitton jackets?

watch out for this seller "Blondys_Bay_Autions" .....
I bought a pair of used Zenella pants from them last time, it came with coffee stains all over the pants, and the stains were not mentioned in the item description. I should have asked for a refund and reported them to ebay, but for 40 dollars, I just kept a mental note to myself not ever to buy from them again.

I see this is one of your watched item, just give a fellow Forumer a heads up

Yeah, Blondys doesn't have good quality control. I bought an old BB suit from them, did a quick once over, and put it in the closet to await tailoring. A few months later, when I was ready to pop over, I noticed there was an annoying hole in one of the jacket sleeves.

Go to STP armed with the coupon from the buying and selling thread and buy some good suits. Corneliani and Samuelsohn would be a great start at less than $500 with coupon this weekend. Also you get an ironclad return policy that allows you to make a mistake with little cost (only shipping).

I appreciate the warning---I've already purchased a few things from Blondys. I'll report back after I get them.
