Hi all and please excuse my lack of knowledge. I have a very simple question only.

I am looking at an old overcoat from the 1940s that is offered online and the (photographed) label of the coat says the size is "36R" i.e. 36 regular.

Could someone please explain to me how to interpret that? How can I measure myself to check whether this size would fit me? Does this refer to chest-circumference of 36 inches? So if I had 36 inches circumference it would fit perfectly, or would already be too small?

Your expert help would be appreciated. Many thanks.
