Coming to New York in May for 6 days with my wife , i want to make sure i don't waste time, and my wife's patience lugging her round the stores that have multiple outlets .So can anybody direct me to the stores with the best chance of picking up a bargain in respect of Incotex / Mabitex pants , Woolrich Woolen mills Jackets and Shoes and any other recommendations

Saks Fifth Ave is a classic and will provide you ample time to shop while your wife is distracted with the myriad women's floors. Mens only has two floors, so you can be efficient.

You can go to Saks anywhere. Bergdorf is much more interesting.

I agree with this, although the NY Saks is bigger and better than any other I've been to.

I would go to Leffot to check out shoes. Hopefully Steven is back from Paris when you are in town.

I also liked the Gant store on Bleecker (new Michael Bastian collab and Rugger collection), J. Crew Liquor Store, Unis & Steven Alan.

If the more rugged streetwearesque stuff is your thing I would check out Opening Ceremony in soho as well as Freeman's Sporting Club on the Lower East Side.

I'd say yes because they arent "fun" shopping experiences, but that being said, Century 21 had Incotex pants the last time I was there.

I actually find going to Century 21 "fun" when I'm out there. Don't always leave with something, but OK with me.

If you're going to hit up the discount shops, maybe do those on a separate day and try to hit Loehmann's on 17th and Filene's at Union Square - those are within walking distance to each other. Then hop on the 4 or 5 train at Union Square and go a few stops south to century 21. get off at Fulton Street. try to hit Century at an off-peak time. Then maybe on your way back you can stop into Leffot.

If you want to do department store's, I would recommend Bergdorf's (as someone else said). Saks is walking distance to Bergdorf's, then from Saks walk over to madison and head south to Brooks Brothers and Paul Stuart - I think these are unique destinations and worth visiting (yes, you can get BB anywhere but its worth it to see the flagship). Also, there's another daffy's about a block up or down from BB on madison, they always have incos/mabis in there. There's an Alden shop around here too somewhere.

You can also try further North on Madison - from Bergdorf's, you can walk up to Barneys. Lobb and I think Weston are in the general vicinity and you can then walk up to the RL Mansion at 72nd. Again, you can get a lot of the RL stuff elsewhere, but its worth seeing the mansion if you've never been.

Hopefully you get some better weather during your trip than we're seeing right now. :-(

Good advice here. If you don't mind crowds and lots of searching then Century 21 is fine. Personally I don't like the place. I would much prefer to hit Barney's for suits and jackets. Also, Filenes while hit and miss is much quieter in the men's section as is Loehmann's (shirts and ties mostly). You can hit all three of these stores well within walking distance. Even Leffot isn't that far away.

Main departments, I found some good deals at Bloomingdale's. While maybe not quite as high end as Saks and also quite busy, the men's wear isn't bad and some good deals to be found.
