This is a culinary wasteland. If you can find a way to make it downtown a little bit farther, you can hit either stumptown in the Ace Hotel for a good coffee and pastry or Eataly. A few blocks farther south you can go to Cafe Grumpy, Grey Dog or Murrays.

If you want to do something totally overpriced with an amazing view, do Asiate in the Timewarner Center. You could also do the Nougatine room in Jean Georges for something else on the fancy side. Otherwise, for a more casual option I would do Cafe Luxemberg or Nice Matin

If you are willing to go further up, the sturgeon at Barney Greengrass is amazing. The croissants at Petrossian Cafe (near Columbus Circle) have been deemed by Martha Stewart as the best she's ever had. What midtown west lacks are a good mid range restaurants. There are great high end (Per Se, Marea, JG) and inexpensive restaurants (Totto Ramen, Wondee Siam, Kashkaval).

If I may add, Bouchon Bakery is never a disappointment.

Glad you mentioned it. We enjoy the Yountville Bouchon Bakery, but I didn't know there was one in NYC. I can imagine craving their Macarons each evening...........thx!

3rd floor of Columbus Circle. Expect a line, don't expect to find a place to sit, especially on weekends.

If you make it to The Ace hotel, around the corner from Stumptown ( good coffee) on Broadway, No 7 Sub.

You won't believe how good the sandwiches are. Google for the menu.

I order it about every 4th or 5th time I eat there. Couple times it was dry and mediocre but overall I like it.

I think the pastas or gnocchi dishes are the best menu items.
