Would Roosevelt Island be a decent place to live in New York?

My friend used to live there. She didn't mind it too much. She was also crazy though.

Good luck with cabs - they may be a *****.

I was just reading about it on Wikipedia. The Philip Johnson-developed master plan with car-free design and the Automated Vacuum Collection System for trash seemed pretty cool. It's close to mid-town Manhattan. Woudn't that make it desirable?

Pretty cool indeed! But you still have to take the tram or bus over.

My brother and his wife lived there for a few years. I've stayed with them several times while they were there.

I think it's a great option. It's a cheap, clean, very safe, and close to mid town. The tram is fun, and the subway runs there. You can also use the bridge to Queens (bus, bike, car, taxi) and then into Manhattan if that's where you're going.

You'll have great views of Manhattan. I really enjoyed walking from the tram or subway along the shore to my bro's apt. And if you're feeling lazy or carrying things, there's a bus that runs around the island regularly and costs a quarter, I think. There's a great thrift store in the little town center, along w/ an Episcopal (I think) church and some serviceable stores and restaurants.

The tram seems really cool. It's on the F train line.
