If you were planning to work in a business climate such as New York ( Wall Street etc), what are some essentials to have when;

a) You are working in an office environment
b) Have to walk several blocks downtown to meet clients or coworkers
C) In both cold and warm months of the year

As well, any specific brands to look into when you are starting out in the business environment.

If you could provide examples of coats, suits, gloves, shoes and any accessories and such it would be helpful. Also if you think there`s any non essential items, please add them as well.

Thanks

I'm curious, Gucci loafers are comme il faut, but French cuffs are de trop?

Don't just shop for labels. If you're a hard to fit off the rack size you will find some vey nice reasonably priced ($1k or less) made to measure options in NYC. You may just want to go that route anyways. Will you have your own office or be a cube dweller? You may not have room for a spare shirt and jacket at work. If you do, it's a great idea. Also, keep a toothbrush, toothpase and mouthwash in your desk drawer and listerine strips in your pocket for emergencies.

I'm not of the school of thought that you can't wear french cuffs if you're just starting out. I was always taught that you should dress for the job you want and not for the job you have. As long as you're not doing it in a flashy or bragging way you should be all set. It's important that you feel comfortable with your appearance. You should never outdress your boss though

Keep a nice shine on your shoes!!!! You see a lot of people with very expensive outfits that are wearing shoes that are so scuffed or dirty that they look like they've been out working in a field. Get a couple pairs of Allen Edmonds shoes and take good care of them. They will treat you great for years. Also get a couple of good quality belts. These are often overlooked.

You need several suits, in navy and dark gray (patterns optional), mostly mid-weights, made of mostly wool. Much of what's shown on Sierra Trading Post would be acceptable.

Some light blue dress shirts are recommended, and you definitely need several white dress shirts. A thin v-neck sweater or two (over a dress shirt) might be acceptable in winter.

You need at least two pairs of dark, plain or cap-toe lace-up shoes. Yes, good point - shining them is important.

Black gloves are a safe choice. The "long coat" should be in a conservative color. A black dress belt (not one of those black/brown reversibles) probably is a necessity.

A good watch is a good idea.
