So, I have found an inside track on some shoes I am going to have made for me.

But I need an opinion on what to get for an "everyday" black shoe.

I have white bucks, longwing brogues in shell, brown chukkas, Indy Boots, brown moccs etc. but I really lack a good black shoe.

Should I go,

Black Chukka?
Black Balmoral? If so cap toe? Medallion? Plain?
Black Blucher? - Narrow foot so the Bluchers tend to adjust in more, but then again these are going to be made, so I can get them narrow on the instep.

Basically, what is "The" black shoe style to have as the black shoe. For some reason when I see a black shoe I think cannot separate it from orthopedic black oxford, I'll slip the indy boots on w/ a grey slack before I think of going black, so lets make the call.

I'm actually leaning towards the chukka.

Oh and hello.

Welcome.

Captoe balmoral, no medalion. That's about as formal as you can get, and one black shoe you will need.

Were it me, I'd get something more unusual made, maybe a wholecut or something with some interestng broguing, and get OTR for the captoe bal, but if you only want one black shoe, then you can skip this.

I've thought about going that way,

What would you indicate as the "least" dressed outfit for wearing a captoe balmoral before it's out of place?

Since I'm rarely in a suit coat I sort of want to peg the lower end of dressy for suit coat, and not be so formal that I cannot wear it dressed down a bit and get some use out of it.

Hmmmmm...

Hadn't considered that one. I'll have to see what they can do with that. I have troubles with some boots not closing enough to grab my foot, but I suppose if not OTR that shouldn't be an issue.

+1 on the captoe balmoral, boot or not

My only pair of good shoes is a captoe balmoral, I wear them with grey tees and slim raw denim and surprisingly it hits a perfect balance in my look (for the moment though; I'm still 21 and in college). I love how when the leather breaks in they don't look rigidly formal yet still oozes that class. And I can totally imagine such scenario with balmoral boots will be even better. Maybe it's just me though.

So, who's making these shoes?
And a narrow foot has nothing to do with the instep. You can have a narrow foot and still have a high instep.
