I don't know - I have them on all my pants. I guess you're right that they don't really serve much of a function, if you think about it.

I don't think that they do any harm. With a fishtail back, you will always be wearing these trousers braced, so you will not need them in practice.
In contrast, for trousers with a straight back, even if they are cut to be braced, a person might still wish to have the option of wearing them without braces. In such cases, sidetabs are essential since otherwise the waist would be too loose.

I looked today at the white pique backless vest in this style at Brooks Bros. The SA got pretty snippy with me about this only being correct with white tie and that I would be insane to wear it otherwise. I tried on the medium anyway and what i found was that the vest did not even show at all from under the one button peak lapel dinner jacket, and in addition was not long enough to cover my waist.
This vest should show, at least partially, even when the the dinner jacket is buttoned right?
