Hi everyone, been lurking for a bit and decided to finally post.

On impulse, I just bought 2 Calvin Klein suits from the Mens Warehouse (buy one get one free) and I can't but feel I paid too much for it. I've been a student for so long that I only really know how to dress in jeans and t-shirts but I really want to start dressing better for possible interviews as well as a few upcoming weddings (one this saturday for younger sister).

I keep justifying the buy because I'm finishing off my master degree in the sciences and this is my graduation present to myself. In addition, the suits would be used for possible interviews for dental school later on.

The website isn't loading for some reason but I got the grey and charcoal grey 2 button suits.

Okay, the damage, for both suits after taxes and tailoring was 700 usd.

C'mon.... take it easy on the kid. He's trying.

I'm a bit of a noob myself. Don't wear your wallet in your pants.... wear out your suits and enjoy!

PS. Keep reading and you'll be ok!

If at all possible, return the suits post haste.

What size are you? What are your measurements?

While not a fan of RTW suits in general, I think you should put the suits on and take some pics so that we can see how you look in them. And if they are a disaster, I hope it's not too late to return them. I know for a fact that you can get a MTM suit from some tailors in NYC that have had good reviews on this forum, starting from around US$850. That might be a better use of your money.

i'm 5' 8", 185 lbs. i wear a 40s with a 32-33 waist and 30 length (touches ground). I always had a hard time buying clothes because i have short thick legs, long torso, but broad shoulders. i normally have to find non pleated pants that are straight through due to the extremely tight fit around the thighs.

as for the suits, i promptly called them and ask them to not start the alterations because i was planning on returning them.

i feel a bit embarrassed now because it was an impulse buy more then anything.

I think $700 for 2 suits is a lot of money for the suits you just mentioned. You probably can get better quality suits for that price range if you have some time to shop around.

However you have a wedding to attend this weekend, so it seems like you have some time pressure.

Good that you can still return them. No need to be embarassed. We all live and learn. But I seriously recommend you to consider a custom-made suit, especially if you are hard to fit.

When you go back to MW to finalize the return, have them measure you. Note the points they measure. Then pick up a measuring tape & take it home with you.

Once you iron out your measurements, start browsing the B&S forum here and especially ebay. Most seller list measurements & you will definitely find much better suits for less. I think I paid $700 for all 10 suits I own and 7 of them were brand new.

Doing a quick search on ebay using 40S I found this:

While not ideal for a first suit, I think it's a much better value.

I also found this:

Better construction than the first & it's solid navy.

Hell, I would even buy 2 suits from this guy for $300 & call it a day.

You have to get used to suits & once you nail down your measurements, likes/dislikes/personal style, you will be better able to make informed decisions going forward, but at least you didn't go broke in the interim on suits that won't retain some of their value.

so essentially, once you know your measurements, what suits your build, as well as likes and dislikes, you really don't need to try on clothes anymore?

I can understand that, I don't really need to try on Banana Republic clothes anymore cause I shop there so often i know what fits and what doesn't. When I need something I just grab it without trying it on.

I guess I'm trying to build my collection of clothes that represents me. I don't want to feel like i'm cut from the same corporate cookie sheet anymore.

OMG, those look great! Time to shop around

I'm surprised that even with your b1g1 free it's still $700! Anyway, I think it would serve you best to start reading up while you shop so you can gain a better understanding of the product that fits you best. Start here if you haven't already: http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=3355
