    Gentlemen -
I've been looking for a new pair of "utility" brown shoes, that trusty pair to throw on with a pair of jeans or khakis.  I settled on a pair of brown suede loafers from Banana Republic, but I have some reservations about how well the suede will hold up through the winter - especially with the amount of salt I end up slopping on my shoes.  Should I look for a more durable leather, or can I preserve the suede with some regular maintenance?  Any recommendations about water/stain repellant products would be appreciated as well.  Thank you in advance,
    Kevin

Suede can be cleaned with a clean soft brush (like a toothbrush), or you can buy special erasers (suede bars) to remove stains and dirt.

Raise the nap on suede by applying steam from a steam iron from about 10 inches away. Also special brass-bristle brushes are available to raise the nap after cleaning.

A protective non-silicone finish (like Scotchgard) sprayed on new suede shoes will help repel water and stains.
