Been a long time since I've had a new pair of real shoes. They fit well, can I safely assume this is just a question of breaking them in for a few days? [AE Strands]

Could be- I have that trouble breaking in some shoes- I cut a piece of adhesive moleskin to cover the spot on my heel where there may be trouble.

Try a band aid or something similar for a while and it should loosen up.

I had significant pain in one of my heels with a new pair of shoes recently - when I took my shoes off there was blood on one sock. I didn't wear those shoes for two weeks while I let the back of my heel heal. From the second wearing on, the shoes fit perfectly! I attribute the first time to the cheap socks that I was wearing.
