I appear to have joined the John Lobb family of fans. I've been intrigued by the museum calf John Lobb offers but I've never purchased a pair before - that is until yesterday.

I have a large collection of shoes (mostly Aldens and Allen Edmonds (spare me the critique if you will). However there are two items missing: a pair of double monk straps and a pair of navy dress shoes (in any style). In a moment of holiday weakness (or brilliance, hmmm), I went all out yesterday and ordered three pairs of John Lobbs, two different sizes in the William double monk strap hoping one will fit, and another to serve my lust for a pair of navy lace ups.

Monk straps. The monk straps I ordered are the William double monk straps (William "I", not William II) offered through Mr. Porter, in plum. Does anyone else have any experience with this color or this model from Mr. Porter? The color is just labeled Plum (not "misty" plum) so I'm not sure what to expect in terms of burnishing or color variation. I'm wondering if this color is simply what we would otherwise call a burgundy calf. I would love to have a pair of monk straps but I've not had good luck in getting a good fit from those I can find locally here in Atlanta - I've tried Alfred Sargent, Edward Green and even Allen Edmonds to no avail. Hopefully one of the two sizes (10 and 10.5) from Lobb will work for me. I really a 10 but sometimes I can make a 10.5 work with a superfeet insolve when the shoe wouldn't otherwise work in a 10.

Oxfords. AND, - and I'm really exciting about these - I've ordered a pair of Willoughby's from the John Lobb site in Lapis museum calf. This is my attempt to find a navy color with a bit more style than a dark navy that could easily be mistaken for black. Any experience with lapis museum calf out there?

Anyway, I can't wait - the shoes are supposed to arrive (from both sources) on January 2. Now I just have to be exquisitely careful about trying on these babies so that I can return one or all of them if they don't work. I hate buying shoes this way (without the opportunity to try them on locally) but it looks like this is the only way to give these a shot (short of booking a round trip flight to New York).
