Wait till you see the figures for the McLaren. If is approaches the F1 it will be a beauty.

My preference is for cars designed by a man with a mission Porsche, Piech, Ferrari, Dennis. When the leader goes and the committees take over things get diluted and you get grey cars not black or white ones.

I obviously go for the McLaren

This is also a great video series about the Big Mac's win at Le Mans:

Awesome. I'd never seen that. The McLaren is probably my favorite car ever built.

The Mac styling is completely generic. I'm not a fan at all.

+1.
McLaren F1. Nothing ever like it.
Still have to see one in person though.

At least it manages to be less banal than the Benz.

Liked the original and like the new one... and I don't generally care for anything Mercedes has done the last 30 years...

I really don't understand why they didn't follow with a car in the tradition of the F1 and 1+2 seating. I mean who needs extra seats in a car like that anyway? And being right in the middle has got to be pretty awesome.

The F1 was conceived as the ultimate driver's car for the road, and one of the its goals was to let its owner drive to the south of France (from England) for the weekend with enough space for 2 people and their luggage. The F1 comes with a custom set of luggage that includes a golf club bag that fits on one of the two side seats. The F1 had more storage space than the contemporaneous BMW 5 series in a total car package that's the same size as a Porsche Cayman.

The attention to detail in the F1, its innovative packaging, and Gordon Murray's involvement in all aspects of the car is why there will never be another car like it.

I agree and unfortunately the closest I will ever get to driving one is in the NFS series. I do have a wheel though, so that's something.

The lines don't do it for me. The original has a flow and cohesiveness that this lacks. It's almost like it's boxy where it should be round.

^ The original was designed in a very pragmatic way -- it used a tubular chassis -- the iconic doors were created because the chassis didn't allow for proper doors.

The new Gullwing is just styling ...probably in response to extensive marketing surveys -- the design has about as much substance as the "New Beetle"

so the bauhaus way is the only way then? i totally disagree with that whole philosophy. sure, form can follow function and most likely should. that doesn't mean that you can't apply decoration and affectation to it once you get there.

the 300SL is one of the most beautiful designs in history. not car designs, but designs in general. Why not take some cues from it since the rest of MBs cars are atrociously uninspired and ugly.

plus, in reality, MB is designing for the real world. Heritage inspired design with tricky gullwing doors and a giant MB star in the mouth is what people with $200k + want and that's what MB is going to deliver. THAT is pragmatic design.

oh, and, I'm CERTAINLY not suggesting that designers go all Jay Mays on us and just redraw successful designs. but there's no use throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
