Dear Styleforum friends,

I just moved to the United States from Lithuania for a new position in finance. I will be starting the position next week. As I am new to style and fashion, I wanted to assess what I am to wear to the office to begin the job on the first day. The first impressions are important to me. What I shall wear for now is the following:

-Sportcoat by Sartorio, gray flannel with stripes
-Trousers by Incotex, navy
-Shirt by Borrelli, white with a button down collar
-Neck tie by Kent Wang, burgundy grenadine
-Shoes by Lazlo Vass, scotchgrain light brown Last Budapest

Looking for some suggestions. Is this appropriate for a job in finance in the US? Some threads say to wear the button down, as it is more popular in American culture.

Cheers,

Jurgis from Lithuania

Button-down shirts may be more common in the US than other places, but dress shirts with regular spread or point collars are fine. There is not need to switch to button down collars. And button down collars are more informal.

Whether what you wear is appropriate depends on your position and company. I think you need to ask if wearing a suit is common where you work.

Yes, I am unsure if I should wear the suit. Could I wear the button down with a suit? I have a very nice navy suit from Luigi Borrelli that I have used for an interview.

Most people at finance jobs wear suits. Since you already have a navy suit, I would wear that on the first day and see what everyone else is wearing. I would probably go spread collar with a suit and tie. Button downs are better for no tie or with a sport coat/odd pants combination. I personally never wear a button down with a tie

Light brown shoes don't sound appropriate for finance.

What is the custom of your office? If it is busines casual that suggests one sort of choice, if suit then that lot is of little use. Not terribly sure about blue trousers for te offcie but the sports coat is not ideal either.

What else is in your wardrobe - those iutems are not enough for a week.
