New Jeans Smell?

I recently picked up two pair of Fidelity Denim Jimmy cut in clampdown dark wash from Nordstrom. After getting them home I noticed the jeans had what I would characterize is a sweet but irritating smell to them, almost chemical in nature. I have since washed them twice and soaked them once and they still retain this odor and are still bleeding a considerable amount of dye when rinsed. Does anyone know what this odor could be? I have heard of "black" wash jeans having odor issues from the dying process, but these aren't black.

Come to think of it, it smells a bit like moth balls. Is there something with some denim that causes this? I've seen a few complaints online but no real answers.
