new guy here--good used suits on a budget

Good evening gentlemen,
I've lurked on this site for some time and have enjoyed it very much. I've recently changed jobs and will be required to wear more formal clothing than I have worn at my previous job.
I work at a comtemporary art gallery and learning center with a Brittish supervisor who expects me to wear slacks and a jacket at the minimum, and a suit anytime I interact with the public.
My salary will be good, but less than I need to stock my closet, at least for the first few months of my employment.
Where should I look and what should I look for to get a couple of weeks of clothes to get me started?
I am a 38 regular if that makes a difference and I'll be in NYC until Sunday if that helps.
