New Borrelli suit - does it need shortening? (pics)

Hi, I feel like this jacket is a bit too long? Would you guys shorten it? I'd say it falls about an inch below my bum, and I tend to like jackets to fall flush with my posterior. I don't know though - what do you think?

Any other adjustments (other than sleeves?) Widen shoulders?

Advice appreciated.

Thanks

I think it needs to be shortened. I try and align bottom of my coats with my thumb knuckle (I forget where I heard that first, but it works for me).

sleeves look a smidgin long. Tough to tell with the shoulders.

However, for jacket shortening I would only go to the best of tailors. They can provide better advice on shoulders and also whether, for example, the collar needs any adjustments too.

Enjoy it!

I agree, take an inch off. Lovely suit though, I love the top of the pockets there!

Well, to be honest, while the sleeves will need to be shortened, IMHO the shortening of the jacket is not as important. If you cannot safely have your tailor do the alteration, don't fret over it.
Looks good otehrwise!

The length could be shortened a bit. Also, there appears to be some structural issues in the right chest-armcye-shoulder area. Do you have a dropped shoulder?

Yes, my right shoulder is lower.

Ok, thanks for your help guys. I'm going to take it now and see what can be done. It will never be perfect, but hopefully it will turn out pretty nicely.

I have heard this too, but I dont buy the argument. While I agree that there is some consistency in arm length from shoulder to wrist between two people of similar height, the lenght of the palm could vary quite a bit; so such measurement, though it works for you, is not a rule of thumb IMHO.

To the OP, I think it looks fine just the way it is. I find shortening jacket length to just where the butt ends a bit, well, short! I personally think it is OK if you have 1/2 - 1 inch below where your butt ends. This again depends on how tall you are, it is difficult to tell from the picture as I can't see where your leg ends; after all it is all about the whole look not just how it looks in comparison to your arms.

Your sleeves may need 1/8 to 1/4 inch adjustment but if you didn't do this, it looks fine to me, seriously. Nice suit btw

I would say leave the shoulders alone as they look fine.

Beautiful color, BTW

I love Borrelli's more narrow shoulder stance; very elegant. I hate the shoulder pad/linebacker look. That top button needs to start rolling. Love the pattern; very slim, 3 button always a great choice.

I agree with Soph that the narrower shoulders look good. Re the overall length, I could go either way. The jacket is fine as it is and would be fine a little shorter. It's all personal preference.

I know that for a couple of years the Borrelli Boutique in San Francisco needed to reset almost every sleeve because the pitch on the basic pattern was off. This year it is fixed. I don't know where this coat comes from, but if it is not brand new stock, I would ask the tailor to look at that.

Other than that, it is a nice coat. I would shorten it, but I like a very short coat in general. I have a long body and short legs so it is a necessity for me. I also prefer a fuller roll, but your body, unlike mine, does fine with this higher roll.

Also, with Borrelli's high button stance, you can shorten, which I would, that jacket by an inch and not throw off the jacket. I really like this pattern, suit. Where did you get it? Suit jacket length blends well as the pants always match, so it's not as big a deal as say with a Sportcoat where the length is much more noticeable.

Decent on those pants would be pretty close to none. Do a two inch cuff for Ed and me. It is the way to go.

I happen to like this length. But that is just me. I am fairly tall and used to be thin.....

so a longer coat is what I have always preferred.

I do know have some jackets that fall right at my bum and to me they look to short although I know they are not. Why don't you get it tailored in the sleeve length and wear it a bit before you decide.
