Hello! New forum reader here, new poster. I've just received a new pair of bespoke boots in cognac "calf" finish and the leather finish seems to be "flaking" off! These boots are not even a week old and I've only worn them inside around the house (because I was told that salt would ruin them and that I should wait for summer). I ran accross one post that talked about "plastic coated leather" here. Is this what I'm looking at too? Given the cost, I hope not! Here are a few pics I just took. They look worse in person...

Is this flaking "normal" for this type of leather...is it normal for ANY type of leather??? I was told that it would "age" over time and develop a patina with regular polishing, but at this rate I won't be able to wear them in a few months. He said that after a while, I should bring them back for dyeing. Am I missing something? Or should I be complaining? Thank you so much, Jordan

I think what Tarmac's getting at is the quality of the maker. It might be normal for a bespoke job from a $100 Asian maker but it probably wouldn't be something you'd expect or accept from someone like Lobb or Cleverley.

Yup. Looks particularly bad if you got it from a quality maker. Light creasing is fine, flaking is not.

Light flaking is normal with crust leathers. This looks beyond normal to eye.

Except for the discoloration on the heel that looks like a botched dye job, the creasing on the front top part and the top of the heel seems to be the cause of the discoloration- which you usually get from medium to low grade leather. Have you contacted whoever made these to try to rectify it? FWIW, I'd still wear them if I were you.
