Nevada Pronunciation, who cares?

So apparently Nevada natives think it's incredibly rude and inappropriate to pronounce Nevada Ne-Vah-Da. They say it's supposed to be pronounced Ne-Vaa-Da (aa as in dad).

But the etymology of Nevada is from the Spanish word nevada which is pronouced ne-vah-dtha.

Why care about the pronunciation of a word when you really are pronouncing it wrong. Can you imagine people from Los Angeles getting upset if you pronounce it the spanish way? I think mispronouncing Oregon is worse since there is really only one way to pronounce it. Nevadans must be huge tools to care that much.

I don't know, I agree that it should be ok to mispronounce a place like New Orleans or that thing in "Hawai'i" especially since it sounds so pretentious for people not from there to try to sound all creole or native or whatever; but Nevada is a whole state, and people should know how to pronounce it. I cringe when I hear people from NY or wherever mispronounce oregon and nevada, since it just shows how isolated they are in their little corner and how little thought they've given to that whole part of the country.

There is more than one way to pronounce Oregon: you can pronounce the final syllable like Bon as in Bon Scott. I think people from the state of Oregon dislike this, but there's at least one city of Oregon that I know of that is pronounced that way.

I grew up in Wisconsin, which the rest of the country inexplicably pronounces WESconsin. I do not get upset about this however, as my life is filled with many concerns that are more important.

Also, I wonder what people from Colorado prefer. I've always pronounced the "rad" part to rhyme with "dad."

Uh-oh, now I'm on a roll. This reminds me of all the nonsense about Louisville, KY. When I was a child, everyone pronounced it in the obvious way: Louie-ville. Then all of a sudden that was a great affront to the good people of Louisville. It was henceforth to be called Lou-uh-ville. But now that's not even enough of a concession to the local dialect. Now it has to be Lüüüü-vl.

From now on I'm insisting that everyone stop saying Milwaukee and start saying Mwahhkee.

Nobody says Nevada, Nevahda, whatever . . . it's either "Reno" or "Vegas."

From living in the Southwest and on the West Coast for many years, I think I hear most people, regardless of where they originated, say it the second way.

Apparently, Haiguise appears contented to remain ignorant and undereducated. One presumes that he is equally comfortable with mispronouncing east-of-the-Mississippi states like Illinois as Illi-noise and New Hampshire as New Hamp-shyre, while most of us would consider that to more fitting of an uneducated yokel. But perhaps this is just another example of a few stuck-in-their-ways easterners with a regional pronunciation bias/arrogance that we in western states Nevada, Oregon, and Colorado must just learn to tolerate (NOT!).

The "it's a Spanish word" argument has always amused me because easterners who mispronounce Nevada actually think they are using the Spanish pronunciation. They are not.
