I've got a great pair of houndstooth pants with brown, tan, and olive checks. I recently acquired a nice brown sportcoat which looks great with the pants. I'm wondering about a tie pattern for such a combo. Should I look for a large rep pattern or just pick up a solid tie (maybe wool) in olive? I feel that a small design on the tie isn't going to work with the small check houndstooth pants. I'd appreciate any help.

I'm not actually looking for a particular color/tie; just a tie pattern/category. Solid jacket, houndstooth pants = what tie? Solid, rep strip...?

Very hard to answer in the abstract without seeing any of the pieces. A solid knit would do nicely. So would a solid wool/cashmere. Any number of patterns might also work. I wouldn't worry too much about the scale of the tie v. the scale of the trousers, as they are far enough apart. Pattern scale is more of an issue when things are close together: shirt/tie/jacket.
